1. Twisters Bar

Part of Colchester’s nightlife scene since the late 90’s, Twisters Bar is located just a 2 minute walk down North Hill from Colchester High Street.

Boasting one of the best late night vibes with resident DJs spinning the best of indie, rock, punk, electro and funk, you can enjoy a tipple from their huge drinks selection and party into the night. 

For a superb quality cocktail, teapots to share, wines, spirits, a range of canned craft beers and mocktails, head here and you’ll be sorted. 

This unique little bar hosts a variety of events and even has an enclosed heated beer garden which is perfect for soaking up the sunshine! 

Despite only being open Thursday-Saturday, this bar is the ultimate venue for those studying here.

2. The Silk Road Lounge & Cocktail Bar

After a busy day of studying you’re probably wanting to head to a bar, have a catch up with your mates and soak up the atmosphere. 

For those wondering which Colchester bars are worth heading to, we have to recommend The Silk Road Lounge & Cocktail Bar.

Located on St Botolph’s Street, this elegant cocktail bar has DJs providing the tunes, regular club nights so you can let your hair down and a terrace barbecue for those summer nights. 

There’s 4 bars spread across 2 floors of the venue with one serving a huge selection of draft lagers and bottles, and a luxury Gin and Champagne Bar serving over 50 different types of gins! 

Open 6 days a week until 5am, you’ll struggle to find another watering hole quite like this place. 

Head down with your friends and experience it for yourself, they even have a large heated garden area for those late night conversations!

3. After Office Hours

When it comes to a good time in Colchester, you need to take a trip to After Office Hours.

It’s not just us who love the name of this venue, it’s pretty cool right? 

Situated on the High Street, you can’t ask for a more central boozer to spend an evening with your nearest and dearest. 

There’s a few things which make this late-night venue so great, first their 2 for £12.95 cocktail deal, their buzzing cocktail masterclasses, bottomless prosecco on Wednesdays as well as the live music nights on the weekend. 

Don’t worry about planning when to go to this vibrant bar, they’re open 7 days a week and serve up some of the best cocktails. 

It’s the place to be after being on campus so make sure to head on down for a get-together with friends, and try out their Mermaid Paradise cocktail!

4. Chappels Bar/ Cocktails

Situated in the heart of Colchester, Chappels Bar is a lively venue kitted out in funky and industrial decor. 

Whether you’re fancying a few cocktails, some beers, some wine, or even gin, this venue serves up 100 different types of drinks so you’re certainly spoilt for choice. 

A cafe by day and a lively bar by night, this place even offers top notch food if you’re feeling a little peck-ish after enjoying some drinks. 

If you’re after some chilled conversations with your friends over drinks, we can’t recommend this place enough. 

It does get quite busy further through the night, but the ambience is warm and friendly, and you won’t have to struggle to hear what your friends are saying!

5. Hudson House

Hudson House is a vibrant and stylish venue which may just be Colchester’s most Instagrammable bar. 

A little stroll into Head Street in the city centre will lead you to this oasis paradise with a leafy beer garden. 

You can make memories with friends and sip on some specialist cocktails made by master mixologists here, whether it’s the English Garden, Superstar Martini or the Kir Royal. 

There’s even resident DJs which provide all the best songs to let your hair down until the early hours on Fridays and Saturdays. 

The only thing that lets this place down is that they’re only open 2 days a week, but you’re still guaranteed an amazing experience upon every visit!

6. Church Street Tavern

Church Street Tavern is located a few minutes walk from the Mercury Theatre, with a ground floor bar which is perfect for socialising with your friends. 

You can relax on the sofas and stools after a busy day and indulge an array of craft beer, fine spirits, cocktails, ciders and wines. 

Make the most of their Happy Hour deal from Wednesday to Friday 4pm till 7pm where you can get a choice of cocktails for £5.50. 

For those wanting a welcoming space to sip on some drinks and have a catch up with friends, this venue is ideal to escape the busy town centre.  

Plus, their outdoor seating area is quite the suntrap during the summer months – they’re coming soon don’t worry!

7. Dreams Cocktails

Relatively new to compared to other Colchester bars, Dreams Cocktails is a late-night venue which offers up a luxury experience. 

Nestled on the High Street, you can cheers to the good times with expertly mixed cocktails and sing along to soul and R&B tunes.

Their 2 for £13 cocktail special is certainly student friendly and is available all day every day Sunday – Thursday. 

You don’t even need to worry about having to move on to another venue for a night out as this place is open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. 

Although, this cocktail bar and champagne lounge is over 21 only so if you’re a fresher, you won’t be able to take a visit just yet!

8. Fashion Cafe Bar 

Fashion Cafe Bar is one of the most favourable of Colchester bars for locals and students alike. 

You can experience drinking rain or shine at this trendy bar on St Botolph’s Street with indoor and outdoor seating, and a heated beer garden. 

Offering a menu of classic cocktails, spirits, beers, ciders and drinks deals which are well suited to your student budget, this bar is a must-visit.

If you love nothing more than getting competitive with your friends, they have pool tables and other tabletop games, as well as live sports showings.
