Autumn is well and truly here guys and gals, but that’s not to say you can’t enjoy some lovely, picturesque walks whilst living in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Here’s our pick of the best 6 strolls you can take as a student from riverside walks to parks to green spaces to nature reserves, there’s tons of outdoor places to explore.

Walks in Newcastle upon Tyne

1. Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene is first up on our list of Autumn walks in Newcastle and rightly so, it’s one of the best green spaces within the city.

This historic woodland was first opened in the 18th century and is just a short bus ride away from the city centre, with tons of nature and wildlife to enjoy. The river known as the Ouseburn, flows through the outskirts of the park.

Whether it’s taking a stroll around listening to music or sitting and reading a book, if you’re looking for somewhere to unwind and escape the busy city for a few hours, you really need to take a trip here.

They even have a visitor centre with a café so you can buy something to eat or drink.

You’ve gotta go to the Jesmond Food Market that takes place here, the street food is delicious!

2. Newcastle Quayside

Whilst The Quayside is a massively popular destination in the city being home to some great bars, restaurants and clubs, it’s also a great place to go for a leisurely walk.

There are seven bridges spanning the River Tyne in Quayside, making it a peaceful place to enjoy the views of the city landscape.

You can walk along the iconic Tyne Bridge or the Gateshead Millennium Bridge!

A popular walk for locals and students alike is the Quayside circular walk, which is a 2 mile walk along the Quaysides of the River Tyne on both the Newcastle and Gateshead sides of the river.

If you’ve got a few hours to kill, it’s worth taking a trip to the riverfront and exploring what Quayside has to offer.

3. Exhibition Park

Next up within our guide of walks in Newcastle to experience this Autumn is Exhibition Park.

This lovely park is located just a short walk away from the city centre and all of the universities.

The tranquil greenspace features a Victorian bandstand, boating lake with swans and ducks as well as plenty of open areas and paths to walk around.

Not to mention, there’s also a skatepark so, if you’re into skating this place is great!

If you’re looking for somewhere to unwind after a busy day or to get your morning started off right, why not head here?

There’s also the botanical-themed Urban Green Café where you can stop for a coffee or something to eat, or if you just want to chill and let life pass you by.

You can even take a visit to Wylam Brewery at the Palace of Arts a micro-brewery and bar within a Grade II listed building inside the park if you fancy it.

4. Leazes Park

Leazes Park is Newcastle’s oldest urban park which dates back to 1873, it’s full of history and is a fabulous place for students to go to relax.

You’ll find this green space situated just a short walk away from St James’s Park Stadium in central Newcastle.

There’s a lake and Victorian Bandstand within the park which offer brilliant views, especially during Autumn when the leaves are beginning to fall.

Head to The Tower Café located inside an old boathouse for coffee, tea, ice cream, paninis or fresh stone-baked pizzas.

If you’ve got a competitive strike, you can go with your friends and make the most of the 6 tennis courts that are inside the park.

Leazes Park is home to many exciting events throughout the year, so keep your eyes peeled, or go for a walk and see if you stumble across some fun activities!

5. Rising Sun Country Park

Rising Sun Country Park offers 400 acres of beautiful scenery to enjoy whilst living within the North East as a student.

You’ll find this place situated in Benton in North Tyneside, despite being slightly out of the city centre it’s accessible by public transport.

You can take a mooch around and discover tons of wildlife from horses to birds of prey to deer’s, and of course, there’s always some cute doggies to meet!

Once you’ve had a long walk around or even a cycle around, there’s an on-site cafe which offers treats such as freshly made sandwiches and scones as well as hot and cold drinks.

The outdoor terrace seating is an ideal for a lovely autumn morning chit chat with a friend.

We recommend going to the bakery within the country park before heading back home, to buy some delicious fresh bread and cakes – it’s gotta be done!

6. Heaton Park

Lastly within our guide of the best places to go for a walk during the Autumn months is Heaton Park.

This large greenspace is just a 15-minute walk from the heart of Newcastle City Centre and is a much loved park for locals and students.

Inside the park is a stunning Victorian Pavilion and Terrace which dates back all the way to 1880, the views makes a great Insta snapshot!

The pavilion is located within the middle of the park and is a great place to go for some lunch, with Sambuca, an Italian restaurant offering up some lovely dishes like pasta and pizza.

Heaton Park is also home to the Community Festival held every June, where you can enjoy some live music, food and arts and craft stalls along with much more.

This place is not one to be missed if you’re searching for some greenery to get away from the busy city centre streets. Go for a walk or even a run around and take in the peace and quiet!
