Things may be a little different this Valentine’s Day with a national lockdown in place, but that doesn’t mean you can’t cook a delicious meal for your partner!

With so many delicious restaurants in the city of Birmingham from delectable Indian cuisine to moreish Italian dishes, why not try cooking a dish yourself?

We’ve done our research and come up with some easy Valentine’s day recipes to cook for students studying in Birmingham!

1. Sirloin Steak & Chips

This super simple dish doesn’t require much work and is perfect for a special treat, especially if you’re a steak lover!

Head over to your local supermarket or butchers and grab yourself two nice pieces of steak and fry it in a pan with garlic, butter, and thyme for extra flavour.

Team this dish up with some yummy golden thick-cut chips (frozen or homemade) or a fresh salad for a lighter option.

You could even try and make your own sauce to accompany the steak, for cheese fans, we’d recommend mushroom & stilton sauce!

It’s so easy to make, and all you need is 200g mushrooms, 6tbsp of reduced fat crème fraiche and 100g of stilton cheese.

2. Spaghetti Carbonara

Why not try making a creamy carbonara with hollandaise sauce to really impress this Valentine’s day?

Carbonara is the perfect Valentine’s Day meal, it’s simple to make and very tasty – what more could you want!

All you’ll need is olive oil, pancetta, garlic, spaghetti, egg yolks, parmesan, and truffle oil as an added extra.

Enjoy this creamy carbonara recipe with a bottle of your favourite vino and don’t forget to season the dish with plenty of salt & pepper!

3. Butternut Squash & Sage Risotto

If your partner is a vegetarian, this recipe is a fabulous choice that’s bound to please the tastebuds!

For this recipe you’ll need butternut squash, olive oil, sage, vegetable stock, butter, onion, arborio rice, a small glass of white wine and 50g of parmesan (or a vegetarian alternative).

Everybody loves a good curry, it’s a timeless dish and Birmingham are known for their Balti’s!

So why not try and cook a prawn curry this Valentine’s day, oozing with flavour and spice.

This particular prawn curry recipe is perfect for those who want to cook a tasty dish quickly and easily, ideal for students!

For this dish you’ll need curry paste (Patak’s original Balti curry paste of course), 1 onion, large raw or cooked prawns that are defrosted if frozen, a can of chopped tomatoes and some coriander.

To mix things up a bit you could serve the curry with some coconut microwavable rice or have a go at making your own naan bread!

5. Roasted Duck Breast With A Plum Sauce

There’s nothing more delicious than a nice juicy roast duck breast accompanied with plum sauce, the perfect duo.

This yummy recipe by top chef James Martin is a luxurious one, great for a cosy night in your student accommodation.

For ingredients you’ll need 2 duck breasts, thyme, butter and star anise.

When it comes to making the plum sauce, grab yourself some dark red plums, 1 shallot, demerara sugar, red wine and beef stock.

If you’re wanting a carb fix, you could team this up with some buttery mash potato or dauphinoise potatoes.

6. Chorizo, New Potato & Haddock One Pot

One pots are the best this time of year! Guaranteed to warm you up with loads of flavour to match.

This chorizo, new potato, and haddock one pot is everything you’d want in a meal – healthy and filling!

The ingredients are fairly inexpensive which means you can splash out on a really nice bottle of red to complement the meal.

To make this meal you’ll need chorizo, salad or new potatoes, dry sherry/white wine, 2 fillets of haddock, cherry tomatoes, parsley and crusty bread.

7. Linguine With Avocado, Tomato & Lime

If you’re wanting to cook a low-calorie vegan dish this Valentine’s Day, look no further because this linguine with avocado, tomato & lime dish is bursting with flavours!

For the ingredients, you’re going to need wholemeal linguine, lime, avocado, large ripe tomatoes, coriander, red onion and red chilli.

The best part? This dish is so easy to make and it’ll be ready in about ten minutes.

8. Vegetarian Chilli

The perfect dish to warm you up this February, this vegetarian chilli is made with ready to eat grains and oven roasted vegetables for the ultimate convenience.

Kidney beans will bulk up this meal nicely, and although a simple dish, the bags of flavour are ideal for a Valentine’s Day meal.

All you need is oven-roasted vegetables, kidney beans, chopped tomatoes and a ready to eat mixed grain pouch.

9. Pancetta & Mushroom Stuffed Chicken

This is another very easy Valentine’s day recipe that can pass as being something quite fancy, perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Day meal in your luxury accommodation!

For this dish you’ll need pancetta, olive oil, one shallot, fresh mushrooms, salt and pepper, boneless skinless chicken breasts and some pesto.

It’ll take about 30 minutes to bake and 15 minutes to prepare so you don’t need to worry about it taking all night!

Of course, you don’t have to stuff your chicken with pancetta and mushroom, you can pick anything you like that works for you, that’s the beauty of it.

10. Honey Glazed Chicken Thighs

You could argue that we’ve saved the best until last because these honey glazed chicken thighs are absolutely delicious!

Of course, this isn’t the most romantic dish on our list, but it’s a great dinner for picking at for a nice relaxed evening with your loved one.

For the ingredients, you’ll need 2 chicken breasts, half a lemon, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of dark soy sauce, and it’s as simple as that!
