Finding a GP in York as a New Student
Two universities, two completely different ways of seeing a doctor, and one city to work it out in. If you are moving to university this year, whether that is a room at Raffles Hall or at Waterloo House, the single best thing you can do in your first fortnight is to find a dentist and a GP in York. You need to sort these things out before you really need them, because it becomes more challenging to get the care you need.

Why Do I Need to Register With a Doctor?
Nobody wants to spend their first week of term on hold to a doctor’s surgery. Register early, and you skip that entirely. NHS paperwork takes a few days to clear, and until it does, you are a temporary patient at best. The University of York and York St John University each handle this differently, so the first question worth answering is simply which one applies to you.
Healthcare at the University of York
University of York students register with Unity Health, the GP practice found on campus at Newton Way. That is a sensible choice if you live near Heslington, but if home for the year is Waterloo House in the city centre, it is worth searching the NHS website’s find a GP tool instead and picking a surgery closer to your front door.
Healthcare at York St John’s University
York St John students have their own health service. The York Student Health Centre, which is tucked away near the Porters Lodge. You can register online or walk in, and appointments go via telephone like traditional surgeries. If you are living further from campus, the same advice applies. Finding a GP nearer your home beats one closer to your lecture theatres.
Finding an NHS Dentist in York: Where Do You Start?
Dentists work differently to GPs in York. There is no single practice tied to your university, and NHS spaces can be hard to come by. Start with the NHS website’s dentist finder, then call ahead to any dental practice close to your accommodation to ask what they have available. It’s important to remember that you need to be registered with a GP before you can be treated as an NHS dental patient, so get the order right.
Pharmacies Close to Our York Student Accommodation
Three pharmacies keep students in York covered. Melrosegate Pharmacy, Fulford Pharmacy Plus Health on Fulford Road, and Badger Hill Pharmacy on Yarburgh Way. None of them needs you to register in advance; just bring photo ID and your prescription details the first time you need to visit. Melrosegate Pharmacy is the closest if you are coming from Raffles Hall, while Waterloo House residents can reasonably pick either Melrosegate or the Fulford Road branch, depending on which way they are already walking. Pharmacies can also treat minor ailments if you want to avoid seeing a GP or visiting a walk-in centre.
Insider Tips
- Register with a GP in week one, not week six, so you are already in the system the day it matters.
- Write down your NHS number the moment you have one. Every appointment and every prescription after that moves faster.
- Ask your home GP to move your prescription records across before you leave home, not after your supply is gone.
- Save the York Student Health Centre’s number in your phone now.
None of this takes long, and all of it matters more than it feels like it does when you’re 100 percent. Sort your GP, your dentist and your pharmacy early, and York starts to feel like somewhere you live, not just somewhere you are staying. If you are still deciding where that home base should be, Raffles Hall and Waterloo House both put you a short walk from campus and provide a luxury backdrop to your studies.
