What Is World Kindness Day?

World Kindness Day is an internationally recognised day to inspire individuals and organisations to spread kindness which takes place every year on 13th November.

It was first formed in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, with the purpose of “highlighting good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.”

What began 24 years ago, is now a globally celebrated day which is promoted across the world.

The theme for World Kindness Day 2022 is “Be Kind Whenever Possible”.

Why Is Promoting Kindness Important?

World Kindness Day is important because it reminds us that kindness should be the norm.

It’s not just about being kind to other people, but also to yourself and the environment.

After all, there are many things in society that divides us, but this day helps us overlook our boundaries and focus on the simple things.

Do you ever go about your daily life and simple things like someone letting you go in front of them in the shop puts a smile on your face?

Small acts like this can really give us a boost, especially if we’re already having a bit of a bad day!

We know, kindness is a typical human behaviour but whilst we all go about our busy lives, sometimes getting through the day can be hard, and being kind to yourself becomes difficult never mind to other people.

Well, this day is an annual reminder that being kind can make a big difference to how we feel.

Being compassionate and kind to someone isn’t just a win for them, but also for yourself.

Research shows that being kind to others is good for our mental health, can reduces stress, improves our emotional well-being and our physical health.

Plus, we’re more likely to practice acts of kindness if we witness them so it’s a ripple effect.

We’re not stating that you should be kind to others just to make yourself feel better, as it should be a selfless act, however, doing good will leave you feeling good.

On World Kindness Day, we are encouraged to practice good deeds and acts of kindness whether it be at uni, at home, work or even in public.

We’re not saying you must go all out to spread the good vibesss, even the simplest things can boost other’s moods and improve their wellbeing, and yours.

Gain some inspiration and use these 8 things to practice being kinder within your life, to see what difference it makes!

1. Call Someone You Haven’t Spoken To In A While

Whilst living away at from home at uni, it can be hard to find the time to catch up with everyone in your life.

One way you can practice kindness is to give someone an unexpected call, or even a visit who you haven’t seen in a while.

You may have drifted from some friends as things change, so why not reach out to them?

Or maybe you haven’t spoken to a relative in a while, why not give them a phone call and have a catch up?

Even just listening and showing interest in what others are saying can really make a difference to someone’s day, especially if they don’t really have too many people to conversate with.

Take the time to truly listen to someone and pay attention to what they have to say.

It might be that you’re feeling a bit lonely too or you’re missing speaking to a specific person, so it’s great to reach out and take a moment to speak to those people out of the blue.

It could make a big difference to how you both feel!

2. Send Encouraging Messages

Another simple way to be kind and spread those wholesome vibes is by sending encouraging messages to your friends, family or even your significant other.

You could even send someone a card or note for them to receive, which is more personal than a text message!

If you often forget to tell someone how much they mean to you, or how proud you are of them, take this day to show someone what they mean to you.

It might be something you’re not really used to doing, maybe you find it cringey, or embarrassing to say these things to people in your life.

However, things like this can really make someone’s day brighter, as we really don’t know how people are truly feeling.

So, if someone is struggling, or even if you’re feeling this way, having someone encourage them can help them out a lot.

It doesn’t have to be a huge message, even just simple messages like “I just wanted to say that I’m proud of you” or “thank you for everything you do for me”.

As we said earlier, when your kind to someone they’re more likely to be kind to themselves!

Doing things for other people can be enjoyable, so if you’re wanting to take action to spread kindness why not do something like buying someone a gift just because?

We know, times are hard when it comes to money especially during the cost-of-living crisis, but if you can, surprise someone with a present who you think deserves one.

It doesn’t have to be anything too expensive, you could get someone in your life some flowers, their favourite chocolate or their favourite drink.

If you’re short on money, you could treat your friend or partner to take away or cook up a nice meal for them.

Again, this is another simple way to be kind that can really perk someone up having someone think about them and do something nice for them!

Another example of things you can do for others as a student is if you’ve noticed the communal areas in your student flat or house have started to get messy, take some time to tidy up even if it isn’t all your mess.

Whilst you shouldn’t get in the habit of cleaning up after people too much, actions like this can infuse kindness into people’s everyday life!

Kindness to others and to ourselves is important, but so is doing what you can to be kinder to the planet.

After all, World Kindness Day is about promoting kindness in all forms!

So, why not see what small changes you can make to be kinder to the world around you?

Whether it’s using a re-useable water bottle rather than buying plastic bottles, reducing your food wastage by meal prepping, picking up litter that you see in the street, eating less red meat, opting to use public transport rather than driving or choosing to buy second-hand clothing rather than contributing to the fast-fashion industry.

All of these actions can make your life more environmentally friendly and contribute to making the world greener, and kinder!

5. Give To Charity

Another way to spread good vibes this World Kindness Day is to give to charity, whether it’s donating your old clothes that you don’t wear and are sitting in your wardrobe to a charity shop or opting to give any food you’re not going use to a food bank.

In wake of the cost-of-living crisis, donating to food banks and those in need has never been more important.

Whilst we’re not saying you should go without, if you do have anything you can donate, perhaps you have tons of food just sitting in your cupboard in your student flat, then source out a local food bank in your uni city or town and make a donation.

Not only is donating to those in need a positive thing for those that are on the receiving end, but it’s also a positive thing for yourself.

6. Practice Random Acts of Kindness

Whilst it’s nice to be kind to the people you know whether it’s family, friends or your significant other, it’s also great to practice acts of kindness to strangers or acquaintances.

It’s fairly easy to be kind to people we know, but even harder to be kind to those that we don’t.

The key to giving random acts of kindness is to do something without expecting anything back in return from your actions.

You could compliment someone you’ve never met by telling them you like their outfit, hold the door open for someone after a lecture, grab a coffee for someone on your course, or leave someone a tip.

These random acts are super positive and can really improve someone’s day.

Sure, it can feel nerve-wrecking to approach people you’ve never met or don’t speak to as much like those within your student accommodation, but you might just make someones day a whole lot better!

7. Volunteer Your Time

Whilst it’s hard to find much free-time when you’re a full time uni student, if you do have any spare time you could try and find volunteering opportunities to practice being kinder.

Whether it’s getting involved in your local community, taking part in fundraising events or helping out at your university.

Not only is it a caring thing to do to help others, but it’s also very rewarding for you to get actively involved in something you care about.

Plus, you can gain key skills and record your volunteering hours which will look great on your CV!

Our final thing to takeaway to promote kindness, is to be kind to yourself above all else.

To Celebrate World Kindness Day this year, spend some time practicing being kind to yourself, this may be difficult but it’s something we should all strive to do.

We can all be a little harsh on ourselves, whether it’s criticising our appearances, doubting our abilities, telling ourselves we’re not good enough, smart enough, attractive enough – the list goes on!

You should try to speak to yourself the way you speak to others in your life, if you wouldn’t criticise a friend about certain things or speak to them in a certain way, then don’t do this to yourself.

Spend more time to do the things that you enjoy, like re-charging your batteries and watching your fave TV shows or films, practicing self-care and keeping an eye out for your mental health or engaging in mindfulness activities!
