University of Leicester

The University of Leicester is highly regarded as an institution that prides itself on quality research and innovation. It was here, after all, that genetic fingerprinting was invented. It is also the place where the remains of Richard III was discovered a few years ago. De Montford University

De Montford University is located in a glorious part of town. You enter the grounds through the leafy New Walk and find the medieval buildings of Leicester Castle and Magazine Gateway surrounding the university buildings. It is a truly stunning place to study. Nights Out

Mosh

Mosh is one of the biggest student nights on the weekly calendar for a night out in Leicester. It runs as an alternative club night every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. For years now it has been the place to be for the alternative student, with three floors of fun to be found. You can sing along to indie anthems, find the DJ with the dance and drum and bass classics, or dance the night away to chart hits.

Club Republic

Another big student favourite is Club Republic, which has an incredible selection of five different clubrooms and bars to explore. There truly is something for every taste here, and this is also the venue for university specific student nights each week.

Live Entertainment

If live performance is more your thing there are some pretty amazing smaller venues in the city, including The Cookie, which hosts both local and national artists from the world of music and comedy, and is always a packed out audience. Firebug offers something a little different, with a big beer garden open until the early hours of the morning, and a great selection of food to go alongside the fact it is a pretty cool live performance space too. The upstairs venue is home to live music, fun club nights, and even immersive cinema events. Other live music venues include The Shed (the longest-running Leicester live music venue), and The Soundhouse. Both venues have seen a whole host of big bands and artists come through the doors over the years, including homegrown favourites Kasabian. The Soundhouse is also host to a regular open mic night, so if you fancy yourself as the next Ed Sheeran head on down and put your name on the list!

Shopping Centres

Street food is a fantastic event these days in most cities, and it does not disappoint in Leicester where Canteen in the Cultural Quarter plays host to a fantastic street food festival each month, with a whole variety of cuisines on show, switching with new street food stalls on a regular basis, as well as live music, comedy, and DJs spinning records all night long. It is the perfect event at the end of a hard month of work.

Festivals

Other festivals that run throughout the year include the Handmade Festival, which is one of the biggest city music festivals in the UK – it runs May Day Bank Holiday Weekend and is located at the O2 Academy. For laughs, head on over to the Leicester Comedy Festival where you can see some of the finest examples of comedians in the country. Leicester is often seen as a stop off before comedians head to the Edinburgh Festival, so expect to see some amazing performers as they work out their sets for later in the year.
