If you’re coming to study in Reading, you’ll already know that this gorgeous 8th century town stands at the confluence of the Rivere Kennet and Thames and was a important trading post between London and the West of England and Wales. It’s ideally located to explore; London is a short train ride away, whilst Oxford, Bristol and England’s south coast are all just a short distance away. Museum-goers will love the Museum of Reading (which has a full size replica of the Bayeaux Tapestry), not to mention the Museum of English Rural Life, The Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology, The Cole Museum of Zoology and the Harris Botanic Gardens. History and literature fans may well be aware that Jane Austen was educated in the town, whilst Oscar Wilde was perhaps Reading Goal’s most famous resident.

Getting around in, and to/from, Reading, is as easy as it gets. The town has a major railway station, and there’s an express bus service to London’s Heathrow Airport, just 25 miles (40km) away. For those wanting a more sedate way of travelling, Reading has a cycle scheme with 1000 bicyces on hand to use at over 150 docking stations throughout the town.

There are a number of great places to eat, socialise and relax in Reading, many of which are on the doorstep of 79 Silver Street. The University of Reading Students Union recommends a number of restaurants on their blog and bars such as “Be At One” (you’ve got to try the Oreo laced “Irish Disco Biscuit” cocktail), the Oakford Social Club (a hot spot for live gigs, open til 2am), Smash Reading, Veeno and Brewdog are all favourite student haunts.
