History Of St Patrick’s Day

Before we dive straight into how to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, let’s just go over some history for those of you who aren’t too well versed in this national holiday.

This special day commemorates Saint Patrick and the beginning of Christianity in Ireland and takes place on March 17th to mark the anniversary of his death in the fifth century.

Did you know, St Patrick was not actually from or born in Ireland – we know, it’s crazy!

Irish people have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years, and in recent years it has become a holiday which is celebrated in every corner of the world.

In today’s age, the annual day celebrates Irish culture and heritage as well as anything associated with Ireland, allowing all of us to express our inner Irishness for just one day.

Whilst the festivities are important to those with Irish-heritage, everyone can get involved and enjoy this national holiday.

how to celebrate St Patrick's day 2023

1. Attend A Parade

Of course, St Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be complete without attending a parade in honour of Saint Patrick, it’s such a fun and festive way to get involved with the celebrations with your pals.

We’d recommend searching to check whether your uni city or town is hosting a parade, plenty of places across the UK host their own fair share of events for the occasion.

You can expect to get dressed up in the traditional colour of green, enjoy traditional food and drink, dance along to music, watch Irish entertainment, and maybe even enjoy some fireworks.

We’d say just go along and soak up the atmosphere.

So, go on then, discover what’s happening in your area and join the hundreds of others coming together to enjoy the cultural and religious celebration at a St Paddy’s parade – you’ve gotta paint the town green as they say!

If you’re studying in Ireland, we’re sure that the festivities will not be one to pass up.

2. Host A Party

St Patrick’s Day is one of the most celebrated annual days of the year so why not host your own party to celebrate all things Irish?

At least this way you won’t have to splash the cash on bevvies!

You can bring the Irish fun to your student flat by hosting a party with green decor, green drinks, hearty Irish dishes and of course all the best Irish music – sounds like a good time to us.

Don’t forget to put up some shamrock in your student flat, which is a symbol of Ireland and Saint Patrick’s Day.

You could even host a group quiz to test your Irish knowledge.

Plus, this year St Patrick’s Day is taking place on a Friday so you don’t even have to worry about heading to your lectures after celebrating the night before – cheers to the weekend!

3. Visit An Irish Pub

Let’s be real, we all love an Irish pub, they’re just the epitome of UK nightlife at this point.

This St Patrick’s Day, why not see how much Guinness you can consume and head to an Irish pub.

Not only will you have a good time and enjoy the amazing atmosphere but you can also support an Irish business.

You can expect a warm friendly welcome, quality drinks, live music and all the best craic when you visit an Irish pub, and they’re even more exciting for Paddy’s Day.

There’ll definitely be plenty of  folk songs and Celtic music to sing along to – did someone say karaoke?!

Of course, one of the most popular ways to celebrate is to wear green, the traditional colour of Ireland.

We’re sure the Irish pubs in your local area will be jam-packed for the festivities so instead of stomping the streets looking for somewhere to celebrate, head on down and enjoy a beer or whiskey.

Just prepare yourself for a long queue at the bar though, as we’re sure plenty of other students will have the same idea!

This year, celebrate St Patrick’s Day by getting in touch with some Irish culture whether it’s listening to some traditional Irish music, such as folk songs or Celtic music or even watching performances of Irish step dancing.

You could even attend a ceilidh, which is a traditional Irish social gathering that features music, dancing, and storytelling – now that’s an offer that’s hard to turn down!

All this of course has gotta be accompanied with a pint of the black stuff, it’s the Irish way after all.
