Table of Contents

If you like to keep fit but don’t have much time or funds to join a gym, or you are a bit shy and want to try out some exercise at home first before you venture out to a gym or outdoor space to workout, exercising at home is the perfect answer.

The beauty of working out is that it can be done anywhere you feel comfortable and where you have the space to perform simple exercise routines.

To help you, we’ve put together a list of some of the top home workouts to get you started.

All exercise is good, the idea being to get your heart rate up. You should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week.

If you can spread this over a few days, even better. If you are sitting down for long periods most days, make sure to get up and take a walk regularly to help both your physical and mental health.

The Benefits Of Exercising At Home

There are several benefits to exercising at home, giving you the chance to stay fit and active without leaving your student apartment, or at least the building.

We should all aim to get active, even if it is just a brisk walk for an hour a day, joining a sports team, or heading to the gym.

Working out at home has the following benefits though:

  • Convenience – You live a busy life at university with your studies and socially with your friends. Working out at home is easy to fit into your life and remain fit and healthy.
  • Flexible routines – You can get flexible with yoga in the Straits Manor fitness area, but with a home workout you have versatility and flexibility in what exercises you do, whenever you want to do them.
  • Perform in private – It can be nerve-wracking to go into a gym, especially if you are a newbie. Home workouts are perfect for building confidence and to have some privacy to focus.
  • Comfortable environment – You’ll also be completely comfortable working out in your home, which makes it easier to get into the zone as you begin a workout.
  • It’s free! – If you are looking to save money but you want to get fit and active, a gym membership might feel out of reach. Home workouts are free, as is your access to the Straits Manor fitness area.

Top Home Workouts

Now, let’s move onto the top home workouts for you to try out in your on-site gym.

There are many different types of workouts that you can easily do at home with little to no equipment, aimed at helping you get your cardio in, to build stamina, bodyweight exercises and many more.

Full body workouts are often a good starting point to have a balanced approach to exercise, especially when you are not aiming for something specific in terms of weight loss, muscle build etc.

Push Ups

A few of you might be scarred from being forced to do push ups at PE in school, but it is one of the easiest exercises that you can do anywhere.

Lay flat on the ground with your hands facing palm down, right next to your shoulders.

With most of your weight on your chest, and your knees and hips not touching the floor, push yourself up using your arms with a straight line from your heels to your head.

A good way to start is to do this 10 times, take a short break of a few minutes and do another set of 10. You might start with a small set, but over time you can build up to more.

Burpees

Burpees are tough, they help to burn fat, improve blood flow and cholesterol levels and give you a stronger heart and lungs.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart with your arms at your sides and then lower your body into the squat position.

Place your hands in front of you and shift your weight onto your hands. Kick your feet into the plank position, lowering your chest to drop to the ground with your elbows up and arms next to your body.

Push off from the ground, jumping forward with your feet and straight upwards with your hands behind your head. Land, and repeat (x10 to begin with).

Alternating Punches

This is one of the top home workouts if you are looking to improve your stamina. 30 seconds to a minute set of alternating punches with dumbbells to progress, will bring great benefits to your cardiovascular health.

Stand with one foot slightly in front of the other, in a boxers pose and bring both hands into a fist shape below your chin.

Extend your arm and punch, one arm at a time in front of you until your arm is straight from shoulder to hand.

Bring the hand back into the guard position as the other punches out, maintaining a consistent pace and tempo. Increase the speed and power as you progress, adding dumbbells to increase resistance.

Yoga At Home

If you’ve got space for a mat in your student apartment and you’ve always fancied giving yoga a go, there are some simple poses that you can try out in the comfort of your own home.

There are so many Yoga for Beginners videos on YouTube that you should take a look at and decide what works best for you.

The relaxation techniques that you learn through yoga can help to lessen chronic pain, increase your flexibility, muscle strength, cardio health, as well as helping to improve mental health.

Downward-facing dog is one of the simple yoga poses that everyone has heard of. It strengthens your shoulders, arms and back, stretches out your hamstrings and calves, and is great at relieving back pain.

Focus on distributing your weight evenly from your palms and lift your hips up and back, away from your shoulders.
