Sheffield is home to two universities, and as such has become a popular destination for students from all over the UK and overseas. It is now home to over 60,000 students, many of whom, decide to stay on after finishing their studies, as it is a city that is home to many activities for young people to enjoy, from sports and music to arts, culture and history.
Sheffield is centrally located within the UK, which makes it a really attractive proposition to students from all areas of the country. The railway stations offer easy rail links down to London and the South, to Birmingham and the Midlands, to the North West of England and Wales and further north to Scotland. The Peak District is on the doorstep and, in fact, 60% of the city of Sheffield is made up of green spaces for you to explore and enjoy. It is a city that is easy to get around on foot, bike, bus or tram, providing new students with an easy way to explore.
There are plenty of cost-efficient, student friendly restaurants and eateries in the city, which you would expect from a city with so many students. From places selling artisan pizzas to South-East Asian cuisine and everything in between, we are sure you’ll find something to tingle your taste buds without having to splash the cash from your student loan. For a student night out there is something for everyone, with The Leadmill fulfilling the needs of Indie kids in the city with club nights and gigs from up-and-coming British bands. A range of bars and clubs can be found in Carver Street, with the city itself boasting many pubs and bars that serve for a great crawl through town. The biggest of the student specific nights can be found at the Hallam Union with five different rooms offering music for everyone and cheap drinks.
As mentioned above, the Peak District offers the great outdoors right on your doorstep, with plenty of day trips, walks and hikes available to explore. Within the city itself, Sheffield boasts a number of attractions, including the Grade II listed Sheffield City Hall, which has delivered entertainment since 1932 and with a capacity of around 2,000 offers an intimate chance to see live acts of all persuasions. The Millennium Gallery has links with London’s V&A and is home to many important artwork and design pieces that portray the industrial heritage and importance of Sheffield.
If you’re into sport you can find all the usual sporting activities at the universities, from football and rugby, to swimming and tennis, as well as outdoor pursuits linked to the Peak District. The town itself boasts two professional football clubs in Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, so head on down to Bramall Lane or Hillsborough to check out some football on a Saturday afternoon. The city is also home to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC.
